Week 1: maximum visibility of recovery
Days 0–2: Maximum swelling and bruising. The eyes feel "heavy" but not painful. Cold compresses dominate. Vision is fine but reading or screens tire the eyes quickly. Most patients stay in or near the hotel.
Days 3–5: Swelling peaks then begins decreasing. Bruising prominent. Sutures still in. Light walking outdoors is fine and helpful for circulation.
Days 5–7: Upper-lid sutures out. Bruising shifts from purple to yellow. First "you look much better" comments from spouse/companion.
Week 2: returning to normal
Days 8–10: Bruising largely resolved or easily concealable. Eye platform looks "tight" — this is the unhealed-tightness phase, not the final shape.
Days 11–14: Most patients back to social activity. Eye makeup permitted from day 14 (fresh tube). Office work fully resumed.
Weeks 3–4: subtle improvement
Visible recovery essentially complete to most observers. Subtle residual swelling visible to you in the mirror — particularly noticeable in the morning, less so by evening. Light exercise resumed.
Sun protection mandatory — UV exposure on healing tissue can produce permanent pigmentation in the incision area.
Weeks 5–8: settling phase
Most of the residual deep swelling resolves. The lid platform reaches its expected position. The scar is pink but flat. Full exercise resumed including running and weight training.
Patients sometimes have a phase around weeks 4–6 where they're not entirely sure if the result is what they expected — this is normal. Final settling continues to month 3.
Weeks 9–12: nearing final
Result at month 3 is ~85% of final. Scar fading. Lid contours stabilised. Most patients at this point describe results as "settled enough that I forget about it."
Touch-up filler (for tear-trough hollow or persistent subtle asymmetry) can be considered from this point if appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
Is my result delayed if my swelling lasts longer than typical?
Some individual variation is normal. Patients with thicker lid skin, prior allergic disease, or higher salt baseline tend to swell longer. Final result timing is still 6 months — the path there just looks different.
