What to expect in a blepharoplasty consultation

A good consultation is more diagnostic than promotional. Understanding the structure helps you evaluate whether you're getting a thorough assessment — or a sales pitch.

What the consultation should cover

  1. Your concerns — what specifically bothers you; how long it's been bothering you; what triggered the decision to seek consultation
  2. Medical history — overall health, eye conditions, medications, prior surgery, allergies, bleeding tendency
  3. Family history — patterns of eye aging in family inform what to expect
  4. Goals discussion — what would success look like for you; what would not be a success
  5. Physical examination — careful assessment of both eyes, including snap-back test, vector assessment, levator function, dry eye check
  6. Photography — standardised pre-op photos in consistent lighting
  7. Treatment plan discussion — specific technique recommendation with reasoning; alternatives explained; what each would and wouldn't achieve
  8. Risks and limitations — both general and case-specific
  9. Cost and logistics — written quote, timeline, what's included

Red flags to watch for

  • Consultation by anyone other than the operating surgeon
  • "Approved for surgery" within 5 minutes of meeting
  • No physical examination — just photo review
  • No discussion of risks or limitations
  • Heavy pressure for same-day booking decisions
  • Promises of specific outcomes ("you'll look 10 years younger")
  • Reluctance to provide written quote
  • Vague or evasive answers to direct questions about credentials or facility

Good signs

  • The surgeon spends time examining you, not just talking to you
  • Specific anatomical findings communicated to you ("you have a mild negative vector here, which means...")
  • Honest discussion of what's better and what's worse than typical in your case
  • Explicit naming of what surgery cannot fix
  • Willingness to recommend "no surgery" or "different procedure" when appropriate
  • Patient education materials provided
  • Cooling-off time before booking

Frequently asked questions

How long should a consultation take?

30–60 minutes for first consultation. Less than 20 minutes is rushed; more than 90 minutes suggests indecision.

Is a photo consultation as thorough as in-person?

Photo consultation is appropriate for initial screening and feasibility discussion. The full clinical examination — necessary for final planning — requires in-person assessment, usually the day before surgery for international patients.
