Suitability

Who is an ideal candidate?

The blepharoplasty patient who is going to be happy with the outcome typically meets a clear set of criteria — and recognising them in yourself helps set the right expectations before consultation.

The ideal candidate profile

The patient who consistently gets the best outcomes:

  • Identifies a specific anatomical finding — "skin hangs over my upper lash line" or "I have visible bags in the morning that don't resolve" — rather than vague dissatisfaction
  • Is in their 40s–70s for upper bleph; 30s–70s for lower bleph; hereditary cases may be younger
  • Has realistic expectations — wants to look rested, not transformed
  • Is medically fit — no uncontrolled hypertension, no bleeding disorder, no autoimmune condition affecting eyes
  • Has stable mental health — body dysmorphic patterns are a contraindication regardless of how clear the anatomical finding is
  • Has 2 weeks of available time for proper recovery
  • Comes to surgery for themselves — not to please a partner, manager, or social media

Warning signs that you may not be ideal

  • You can't articulate exactly what bothers you about your eye region
  • You've had multiple cosmetic procedures and remain dissatisfied with each
  • You're requesting surgery during a personal crisis (divorce, recent job loss, recent bereavement)
  • You're requesting a 'transformation' rather than improvement
  • You bring photos of celebrities and ask to look like them
  • You believe the surgery will change your career, relationship, or life in ways unrelated to appearance

None of these is an absolute disqualification — but each warrants careful discussion before booking, because the post-operative satisfaction in these scenarios is often poor regardless of how technically perfect the surgery is.

Frequently asked questions

If I'm 'almost' an ideal candidate, will I still benefit?

Usually yes — but the consultation needs to honestly note which factors are slightly unfavourable and what they mean for outcome. Most patients aren't textbook ideal; identifying the imperfections and planning around them is the work.
